Harvard

I went to Harvard for a damn student forum.

I dreamed of arriving in America thousands of times except by means of this forum.

Sincerely speaking, although i had lowed down my standard about the forum before i went there, it let me down a lot.Compared to my previous exchange experience, this program was really a mess. Fuck Chinese Harvard students!

Some of these staffs told me it's just part of their several part-time jobs. So i gather that they might just wanna polish their resume (so do I.) ...

Anyway, when it comes to what impressed me a lot during the conference, i wanna list three things.

To begin with, the people sitting next to me on the flight. Our ticket was rather cheap, which meant we had to translate six times in all!! Nevertheless, during each time, I'm lucky enough to sit next to foreigners! So, i seized the chance to talk with them. They taught me a lot!! From business concept to interview skill, from management to science. Indeed, it amplified the value of my ticket.

Second, the Harvard museums. I spent two days visiting 3 Harvard museums, i mean, i watched every section very carefully. Science attracted me a lot!! I am moved by the aesthetic beauty of nature as well as the sophisticated personal relationship we inherited from nature.

Last but not least, the attitude to people. I'm impressed by U.S. way of making friends. They r sincere, casual and respectable. Letting alone the foreigners i met on flight (some of them r high-level managers, but they treated me very nice, or overnice. -grins-), Harvard students r rather hospitality.

e.g. the last morning in Harvard, i got up very early to catch the flight, so i went to the dining hall to take some photos. All of a sudden, a boy said to me behind, 'would u like to drink xxx with us?" can i? he invited me to join their discussing group. I couldn't help going with him. Actually, they majored in CS. O.o But they talked with me a lot. That's wonderful!

All in all, it made clear that i indeed had a good beginning & ending in U.S. except the middle period. In this sense, i strongly suggest those Chinese studying in U.S treat their compatriots nice. U know, they always wanna ask our side to offer best students, but look at what they do... Shame on them.

In addition, this trip alarmed me to practice English more and stimulated me to be part of Harvard students in the near future! & i wanna be immersed in that atmosphere.

Btw, what surprised me a lot lies in that Americans used to staying up very late. Every morning, i mean, 5 or 4, i saw Harvard students working in the dining hall, or just coming back from the lab....It seems that they work harder than Chinese.: ) Deeply moved by them!

Last Friday, Ruben flied to Mexico.

I still remember he taught me how to express the number "20"."Stretch our your hands, obverse, reverse, obverse, reverse, and rock your body at the same time. That's cool!" I also remember we argue about Latin greetings - kissing friend's cheek. He laughed at my conservatism. "Will you kiss me?" Regardless of my red face, he gave me a big smile.

Now, although the above plots are still vivid in my mind, the windows for meeting him again is open briefly in that I will come back to China at the end of August.

A wound breaks in my heart without sound.

I'm afraid of and extremely avoid of the last sight of friends. Therefore, I asked Ruben his MSN as if we just separate temporarily and will keep contact every time we are on line,

Nevertheless, I know it is of few possibilities. That's why I gave him a final kiss.

Looking back from my life, how many people left in this way? Just like the cattails are spread by winds, where are they now? What are they doing? Did they miss me in a clear night with moon once?

I keep my friends in my heart like iced fossils. When I were old, I would take out these fossils, warm them with my body temperature, and recall what happened before.

This summer in Canada would be sparkling at that time, and I hope I will have chance to emerge in my friends' memory iced fossils and when they think of me, they will feel happy and warm.

Confession

All of a sudden, I lost my passion to do homework this week.

I intended to write the survey about my research on Monday. Instead, I listened to a piece of rock music repeatedly until 2 am in so far as I lacked the confidence and courage. Even though I knew I did wrong at that time, I couldn’t stop myself being at sea with the noise.

Next day, after school, I tried to read a book related to my topic only to find that I was more interested in two new-borrowed books from NEXSUS. On finishing browsing around these two books, I began to review the lesson of my seminar class. However, I failed to understand the pronunciation skills I learnt on that day. This result disappointed me a lot so that I set aside the notebook and took a walk around the neighbourhood. I didn’t come home until 9 pm. At that time, my major book caught my eye. It reminded me of hard future I will face when I come back to China. I was so afraid that I went to bed at once.

On Wednesday, it seemed that I recovered from the passive feelings. I read the book and started to summarize it. When I got down to business, my homestay mother asked me to go upstairs (I live in the basement.) to see her close friends. Of course, I have no alternative to refuse other’s kindness. Then I stayed until the whole party finished and cleaned up all the mess when it was 12 pm.

In view of such situation, I got up very early this morning to write my homework. At the same time, I was installing a new anti-virus system. Owing to drinking a lot last night, I forgot to delete the old one. They conflicted so fiercely that my computer was collapsed!

I tried to use the safety model to enter the computer, but it didn’t work. The situation drove me crazy because I hadn’t sent my homework to my email address! (I had lost my pencil box the week before last week, in which I put my memory card in it. Since then, I have always sent my homework to my email address and opened it at school to print it.) Harbouring a bad mood, I brought my PC to school to ask for help. Fortunately, Paul, the staff of NEXSUS, was willing to help me. He told me I could take it back today. However, it was a bad news waiting for me when I came to NEXSUS again, that is, I couldn’t pick up my computer until next Tuesday!@! And I had to take the risk of losing all my documents!@@! I fainted.

Now, I’m uncomfortably using the public computer in the library. But the only one I can blame for is myself!! What do I do these days?! Always waiting time... Owing to this reason, I left little time to correct my mistakes!!!

Why did Grey Owl success?

Grey Owl describes Grey Owl’s whole life. In short, when he was alive, he was regarded as the symbol of North American Indian in that he used his own experience to propagate protecting Canadian forests all around the world, which is the home of Indians but whose size is decreasing every year owing to human’s overcut; however, after his death, newspaper uncovered that he had no Indian blood at all.

The latter is the main content of this book. Undoubtedly, the author, Vicky Shipton, aims at returning Grey Owl to an ordinary person rather than a star. In this view, I conceive him as a case of commercialization made by the media. In this sense, I’m curious about why he could success.

In my homework, I explored some possible reasons based on this book. First, in around 1937, Europeans worried about Hitler and Mussolini and they hold that a war was coming soon. Second, at that time, people didn’t have jobs or had boring jobs. Third, before Grey Owl, people knew little about North American Indians since previous writers had described Indian’s life as bystanders. In other words, Grey Owl made full advantage of the timing.

I still agree with the above opinions; however, I want to supplement another important one, in effect, Grey Owl condemned “white man” of cruelty on behalf of Indians. Fortunately, this standpoint catered to ordinary people. As mentioned, they are worried that Nazi would occupy their countries. Unconsciously, they want to express their condemns of other countries’ invasions, or the cruelty between human.

In view of all the above situations, Grey Owl created a different world – a better world in that difficult time. His depiction of Canada’s wild forests and his unworried life was a dream for many people. Hence, he became popular.

Nevertheless, can human build a heaven on the mundane world? Impossible. Neither does Grey Owl. In order to meet consumer’s demands, the media promoted him. On the other hand, for the same reason, the media made his real life public after his death. Actually, Grey Owl isn’t more than a tool. Nither do most stars. Simultaneously, the media is a tool, too. It turns around the taste of people. But what is public’s taste? How can they cultivate this taste?

I’ll keep thinking.

Is there an ideal husband?

I just want to discuss about the play seriously.
What’s behind the ideal?

An Ideal Husband is the second book I brought from NEXSUS. It is a famous play written by Oscar Wilde. The writer uses language cleverly and triggers many deep thoughts of mine.

Lord Goring appears as a good-for-nothing man. The following dialogue is one of the most well-known excerpts from An Ideal Husband.
Lord Caversham (Lord Goring’s father): Why do you like London Society so much? It’s full of nobodies talking about nothing.
Lord Goring: I love talking about nothing, Father. It’s the only thing I understand.
Lord Caversham: You seem to live only for fun.
Lord Goring: Why not? What’s more important, Father?

However, when his friend, Sir Robert Chiltern, was hung on “lettergate”, Lord Goring coordinated successfully and solved the crisis thoroughly so that Robert saved his marriage and career. As long last, it was Lord Goring that persuaded lady Chiltern to support Robert Chiltern to gain the high position from the Prime Minister, which was refused by her at first.
On the whole, on one hand, Lord Goring made advantage of London rules to help his friend and kept his secret. On the other hand, he condemned his friend’s dishonesty mildly. In the latter, we can recognize that Lord Goring’s inner side is so justice.

Compared with him, Robert’s another side isn’t as good as Lord Goring’s. To the public, he is a respectful politician and an honest man. In fact, he started from a dishonest bart. So as to gain a position of the government, he needs a great of money. Consequently, he sold a government secret to Baron, a businessman who agreeed to sponsor him.

Take Lord Goring and Robert Chiltern as examples, I argue that following intensions are eternal and common to life.

1. Power and Honesty
“Power” and "honesty" are the words used most frequently in An Ideal Husband. In the play, Mrs Cheveley said, “You’re a man of the world. Everybody has a price”. This notion is quite similar with the British philosopher Hobbes. Borrow Hobbes’ words, everyone pursues power and people treat each other the way wolves do. The truth of the world is so cruel. The value of a person is measured by price. As commodities, those who have high prices are popular and everyone aims at becoming such a so-called successful man. Inevitably, this trend stimulates unfair competitions. That’s why Robert Chiltern chose to sell himself for money.

But, can we pursue “nothing”? Provided we do so, we will keep away from all the outside and inside noises. Actually, that’s the core spirit of Taoism. On the other hand, can we tolerate a life without any purposes? Like Lady Chiltern said, “You need a serious purpose in life”, although the serious life is the ground of unhappiness.

Sine we can’t prevent such a tendency, how should we do to keep balance between power and honesty? I suggest we’d better resort to our heart and listen to its voice. In truth, we know we don’t need so much, and we want money and status only in that others own them. It is deeply sad because we live in the eyes of others. Actually, we are afraid of being subordinate to other people.

In view of this situation, in light of Chinese philosophy, as long as our minds are easy-going with matters, we will experience real peace. In other words, we can be self-sufficient if we limit our desires in the sphere of our ability; otherwise, we will suffer from the pain stemming from the condemn of our consciousness one day. In Lord Goring’s words, “I bought success at a high price”. He is hung on the sense of guilty.

As far as I am concerned, Lord Goring reverses the method and the target. He hopes that he can become a successful honest man, whereas he makes it by means of dishonesty. It sounds ironic; however we all live in some paradox. Perhaps it is human nature. In this sense, are human weak?

2. Men and Women
Men try to look for excuse, and women are inclined to believe men. In this play, even though Lord Chiltern makes a mistake, he blames it for her wife. “That was your mistake. All women make that mistake. You all think that we are perfect. But all men make mistakes. Why don’t you forgive us? We need your love because we aren’t perfect.”

In view of men, wives should support them no matter they are right or wrong. Are men lonely and stereotyped animals? Maybe. And in most cases, women have no other alternatives except believing men. “She must stay with her husband and help him”. Take Lady Chiltern as an example. Provide that she had persisted her belief that we should be honest, she wouldn’t have forgiven Lord Chiltern and then their marriage would come to an end. On the other hand, if she chose to stand on her husband’s side, it meant she had lived in a lie for years. Can she ask for subsidy? Maybe.

To some extent, I think Wilde is qualified to be the editor of the TV series, Sexy and the City inasmuch as he observes men and women so carefully and deeply. He depicts human nature directly, no matter it is kind of tragic.

3. The Bright Side vs. The Dark Side
“Have you got a dark secret in your life?” I think everyone has. Some corner of our minds is dark. Nevertheless, the fundamental nature of human is to fight with these ideas. Now that we can imagine an “ideal” person, it is possible for us to become such a man.


Imagination:

Why not design Lord Goring as a negative figure? Then the play will include betrayal, which makes it more attractive.

- You don’t believe that, do you?
- I believed it then and I believe it now. You can’t understand – you have never been poor.
- But what did the Baron want from you?
- When I was leaving the said to me, “If you give me any useful secret information. I’ll make you a very rich man”. Six weeks later I received some important papers…
- Government papers?

Amanda's sugar

After dinner, Susan brought some strawberries as dessert and Amanda wanted to put some sugar in it. Her mother refused because strawberries are sweet enough. However, Amada kept requesting. In the end, Susan conceded. Amanda didn’t hesitate to pour sugar into the dessert. We all laughed. It reminded me of my childhood. At that time, I liked sugar as much as Amanda does. However, as time passing, I kept away with sugar and others tasting sweet. What goes wrong?

I think the reason is that when we are getting old, we gradually know that living is hard. Many dilemmas and difficulties have been grasping us. More often, we fall to the ground rather than overcome it. The truth is life is full of bitter. Hence, we grow up with pains. We learn to tolerate others’ disregards to us and impulse ourselves to be stronger.

In this sense, sweet is an illusion. In fact, we struggle to survive and be better. Perhaps only to children, the world is consisted of happiness. Nevertheless, it is our parents that take the responsibility so that we could spend such a period free from anxiety. Thanks to their sacrifice, we lived in the heaven.

After all, an artificial heaven can’t maintain. With our development, we have to deal with lots of people. Unconsciously, we may be at odds with some of them, whom our parents are unfamiliar with. Their reactions will affect us and destroy so-called heaven easily. Borrow what Sartre said, others are enemies.

Considering above thoughts, sweet is a lie. Thus, adults refused it.

But it isn’t entirely correct. The memory of sweet has been kept in our hearts. That’s why we endeavor to create heaven for our children continuously and treat others well carefully.

Life is a lure. Sweet first, bitter later. Fortunately, we are doomed to have the courage and power to overcome these bad things and to turn life into sweet. With this respect, life is a box of chocolate, but it is made by ourselves.

I come, I see, I conquer.

That’s the right attitude.

Philosophical Reflection on E.T.

I borrowed a simplified book on E.T. (the extra-terrestrial) from NEXSUS last week. E.T. has a big fame, but I hadn’t known what it talks about. That’s why I borrowed this pamphlet.
After reading the book, I was deeply moved and thought of the following question:
How should we treat a stranger?

It was inevitably that we are self-oriented in so far as we know ourselves first. Consequently, we are inclined to perceive our thoughts as the mere correct way and use this standard to judge others. If others have different opinions with us, it was they that must be wrong.
Given we harboring above trend, when we meet an alien, what will we do?

Naturally, we regard it as an object, the same way that scientists deal with E.T. Since it has no relation to us, we treat it anyway we like. We may study it, sell it, prison it, and even kill it.

However, it isn’t the way that Elliott did. E.T. is a member of his family. I am really moved by the imagination that E.T. could have the same thought as that of Elliott. In the movie of E.T. (I couldn’t help watching the movie after reading), Steven Spielberg designed a humorous plot, that is, when E.T. stayed at home watching sweethearts kissing, simultaneously, Elliott did so to his classmates in class. This is a joke; however, I cried when Elliott repeated “E.T. phone home”. He expressed what was in E.T.’s heart. Through this plot, I think the direct wants to convey a piece of important information to us, that is, E.T is part of Elliott.

Can you imagine that an alien becomes part of your life? In other words, we share our existence with others, or we broke the barrier of ourselves. When we do so, the world will extend to the whole universe! In some sense, I argue that E.T. symbolizes the universe because he comes from outside us.

Coming to reality, we have to admit that it is difficult, and it is so rare that it can only happen on children, those who haven’t immersed in the mundane world yet. It sounds too pessimistic. But it is the truth; otherwise, why don’t we take a more glimpse at the poor, the diseased, and the miserable?

As far as I am concerned, if we are cool, the world is cold. In reality, we just put ourselves into the prison by rejecting others. However, if we are open to others, we will harvest tender sentiment. Although it is thin, it is of essence and common. That’s why millions of people are moved by the story of E.T. But is it because we are short of love and care in daily life? If so, we’d better give these to others as much as we can, no matter we can be paid off or not. And this is part of the meaning of Jesus’ sacrifice. In Christian, the whole world is changed by him. I agree.
